Beginning as a research project on the Victorian New Woman and the “freedom” the 1890s cycling boom gave to them, prompted by the simple concept of a woman having to ride astride on the bicycle rather than sidesaddle, as with the horse, BICYCLE RACE became a much more conceptual look at cycles and conditions of the woman in the world. Culture is formed around defining the woman. If the woman is labeled, if she is categorized even within her autonomous decisions, then she can always be filtered down enough to be understood. There is forever an objectification in this labeling, a consumption by what is consumed.
