Redford Reece

Redford Reece is an American artist; born in the Midwest and raised in the Carolinas, with a brief stint in California to be held by Arnold Schwarzenegger for a magazine. They love reading Wikipedia, eating corn, and getting really excited about road signs. Red can most often be heard comparing something to something else. Their obsessively categorical mind earned them an International Sculpture Center Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award in 2025. Their work has been shown around southern ME, in Dallas, TX, and in various publications. Currently pursuing a BFA in Sculpture from Maine College of Art & Design and living in Portland, Maine; Red misses billboards.

My work deals with interconnection and incomprehensibility. I make nothing I’ve never seen before. I pull my work out from under the American flag, which I wear like a cape. I am drawn to glossy excess, peacock masculinity, and Bad Taste. I am fascinated by the biggest balls of yarn and the olympic size swimming pools. I eat at Texas Roadhouse and consider it research. I look at the airport ceiling and find the vibrant grid present in all things.
I am a performative sculptor. When I perform, I am objectifying myself. When my objectwork stands in front of you, it becomes me, enlivening itself. I simultaneously destroy and embody Impossibly Plastic American Realities through both repetitive, futile tasks and slap-dash making. I seek to pull out the perversion inherent in normalcy. My work is familiar yet confusing, but not dreamlike. It is concrete, in liquid form to the eye, solid to the hands. I cut things up and piece them together, creating quilts, mosaics, and masks of grotesque and holy tabloid fabrications.
