Redford Reece

Redford Reece is an American artist; born in the Midwest and raised in the Carolinas, with a brief stint in California to be held by Arnold Schwarzenegger for a magazine. As a 2025 recipient of the International Sculpture Center Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award, he will be explaining to old people that he “doesn’t carve marble” for the foreseeable future. When Red isn’t making art, he is reading Wikipedia, eating corn, and noticing squares everywhere. Currently pursuing a BFA in Sculpture from Maine College of Art & Design and living in Portland, Maine; he misses billboards.

American culture is all drag. The excess, the gloss, the machismo - there is an uncanny beauty in it all. I am fascinated by the biggest balls of yarn and the olympic size swimming pools. I eat at Texas Roadhouse and consider it research. I look at the airport ceiling and find the vibrant grid present in all things.

I am a performative sculptor. When I perform, I am objectifying myself. When my objectwork stands in front of you, it becomes me, enlivening itself. This duet lends itself to the futility of my material interests. I dive headfirst into incredibly repetitive, laborious processes in order to recreate Impossibly Plastic American Realities. I pervert found materials and iconography into symbols for that commercial you couldn’t escape at 3 am, that strange sign in your neighbor’s lawn, or your greatest tweenybopfantasies. I cut things up and piece them together, creating quilts, mosaics, and masks of these grotesque and holy fabrications.
